Armed Service Flag

A few months ago there was a NEWS story about a man making "Blue Star Banners" for families who have a son or daughter serving in the Military. I thought -- what a cool idea. And then a few months later there was an article in a quilting magazine about the "Blue Star Banners". Again I thought cool idea. Now as most ideas that run around in my head if I don't act on them they keep pestering me until I do something about it. ;o}
So a few days ago I Googled Service flag pattern and found the guide lines for making one. Yesterday I made up a couple of the flags -- take a look.....

The "Blue Star Banner" has a star in the middle and is displayed in the front window of the home. If the family who has a member serving in the services is lost then the blue star is covered with a smaller gold star... This tradition was started back during WWI. I decided to make up a couple of the banners. One will go to my sister and then -- there are a couple of staff members at work who have sons in the military so I made one for them.

I also read that you can have up to 5 stars on one banner. My mom has 3 grandsons serving in harms way. So this one I made for her. As my brother (he served in the Army for 20 years) once said freedom isn't free. I am so very grateful to those who fight to keep us free. "Thank You"

Hope you have a great day. :o}

You don't know me, but I do follow your blog and have it on my side bar, as I like to know what other Oregonians (I'm from Yoncalla) are doing. I was so shocked this morning when I saw what you posted about. You see, our 1st born Grandchild was one of the boys that was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday. Have been all over the internet to find the pattern for the "Fallen Soldier" banner. Finally did find it and now am trying to bring myself to make one. I tried yesterday, but to many tears got in the way. Thank you for your posting.
