Have ever heard of a "Pickle Dish"? Do you know what a "Pickle Dish" is? No I'm not talking about a crystal dish your grandma put her best dill pickles on. I'm talking about the quilt kind. I first came a cross a "Pickle Dish" in 2007 and thought that looks like a good challenge. (I like to give my self challenges just to spice things up) Then in 2008 I decided to give one a try. Now I will tell you my first attempt didn't go so well. My fabric choices were not the best and I didn't like how the pattern went together. So I put it away for awhile. A few months later the Fons & Porter magazine came in the mail and there was a pattern for Mariner's in a pickle quilt. I took a look and decided to take the pickle part and give it a try. Using different fabrics and a new pattern my second attempt went much better. So what is a "Pickle Dish"? Well, a "Pickle Dish" is a variation of a "Double Wedding Ring". On the wedding ring the arcs are made of wedges. On the "Pickle Dish" the acrs are made of triangles. Now with that said, Before you plunge into a "Pickle Dish" there are a few things I would suggest:
#1 try doing a Double Wedding Ring first. I did this wedding ring back in 2004. I only did 9 rings I just wanted to give it a try. And it worked up pretty well.
suggestion #2 buy a good book or pattern for the project it really helps to make sure your quilt comes out the way you intended. This is the book I used. In fact I went back to it when I did my "Pickle Dish" the pattern I used from the F&P magazine had very brief instructions so the book came in handy.
OK now are you ready here is my "Pickle Dish"....
I like my fabric choices this time and I'm happy with the way it turned out.
Suggestion #3 the arcs on this project were paper pieced. That is the only way to go with something like this. (I am not a big fan of paper piecing but sometimes ya just gotta do it)
Now if you noticed I only did a few rings on each project. I only wanted to try both techniques not make a whole quilt. That's what I like best is taking the part that intrigues me and give it a try. So now for my next challenge I wonder what it will be......

I think I can see why it's called 'pickle dish'; the triangles give it the same effect as the cutwork on my mother's pickle dishes. Very intriging pattern, that has a beautiful affect. I bet it would be quite a challenge.

I have always loved the Pickle Dish pattern and, yes, paper piecing is the only way to do one.
I'm with you on the "pink" phobia. I always felt it was because I raised four sons and the color pink was so foreign around my house. My stash is painfully lacking pinks. Now I see all of these great Valentine quilts and wish I had PINKS. ;(
